Q: Tell me a little more about the NMR LipoProfile test and why your assessment use this instead of other insulin values?
A: The NMR LipoProfile test provides lipids, particle number, and LP-IR score. The LP-IR score is significantly better than fasting insulin or HOMA-IR in predicting incident diabetes. Additionally, combining fasting glucose and LP-IR allows for a gender specific estimation of eight-year diabetic risk. Also, reduction of LP-IR (achievable with therapeutic lifestyle change) was significantly, independently predictive of subjects not experiencing incident diabetes in the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP).
Answers about the testing experience
Q: What can I drink during the 12-hour fast prior to having my blood drawn?
A: To get an accurate biomarker value, you need to be completely fasted—that means no calories at all. You can drink black coffee (no additives!) or water. It’s just 12 hours, you can do it!
Also, remember to do no strenuous exercise during your 12 hour fast.
Q: What biomarker values are collected and shared in the report?
A: Our report shares the complete NMR Lipoprofile panel with you as part of your report—you bought it, you get the complete results. You receive the following score:
LDL-P
LDL-C
HDL-C
Triglycerides
Total Cholesterol
HDL-P
Small LDL-P
LDL Size
Fasting Glucose
Lipoprotein insulin resistance (LP-IR)
Lipoprotein(a)*
GlycA*
*Not included in the Diabetic Risk Assessment Report.
Answers for licensed healthcare providers and staff
Q: Can my own clinic staff do the blood draw instead of sending my patients to a LabCorp facility?
A: Yes, but we do prefer to handle the full process for you. However, if you prefer to do your own labs, we will provide your patient with their LabCorp order requisition number when they complete their pre-test survey. Then your in-house lab will need to submit the specimen with that requisition number. To properly collect the blood sample, your lab will need to follow LabCorp’s guide for NMR specimen handling.
NMR LipoTube [black-and-yellow-top tube] is the preferred container, plain red-top tube, lavender-top [EDTA-no gel] tube, or green-top [heparin-no gel] tube)
Refrigerate all acceptable tube types as soon as possible after centrifugation and within 24 hours of collection.
Keep refrigerated prior to shipment, and ship on frozen cool packs.
Do not store at room temperature. Do not freeze the sample. Sample is stable refrigerated for six days.
